Feedback from our presentation – ‘Coordinates’

Overall

Overall, I think that my presentation was successful because my videos were able to run smoothly and the audio was all synced up. There was a small predicament at the beginning of the set up because I had to move rooms so I had the challenge of finding a new space to present in, rearranging the area to fit my work and connect the laptop I was using to the big screen.

Feedback

My feedback from people who viewed my work was overall very positive and people had lots of questions which shows they were thinking about the deeper meaning behind my videos.

‘Stream of consciousness’ – This video raised a lot of questions about where it was supposed to start and finish, I explained that because it was on a loop, it didn’t matter where the viewer began watching. Most people commented that the layout of the video being played inside the box was making their eyes feel strange when they came out into the real world, I wanted people to have this reaction because it represents when you wake up from a dream or snap back into reality after these thoughts and you feel disoriented. Overall, I’d say that people enjoyed this video and the concept behind it.

Some comments that were made included:

‘It made my eyes feel weird’

‘It looks like they’ve gotten lost inside that box’

‘I like how everything flows together and creates one continuous video, imagine a 10 hour loop version on YouTube’

My dance video – People commented on how they liked my dancing, many didn’t even know it was me. The general consensus seemed to be that they liked the violin playing done by Theo Warrington, and that the dance seemed to fit well with it.

Some comments that were made included:

‘Is that you?!’

‘The music is so pretty’

‘I love how the movement complements the violin’

One person commented saying that they thought my two videos linked, saying that the ‘stream of consciousness’ video was representative of inside the mind and the dance video was a visual of daily life and what goes on externally to these thoughts.

This is a photo of the video playing on the screen.

These are the videos I showed:

What I would do differently

If I had a chance to do it differently, I would:

  • Ensure my iPod was fully charged so I could take more photos of my presentation
  • Maybe experiment with a few friends to begin with to see if I needed my ‘Please Look Under Sheet’ sign or not

Dance video – 3

Second draft:

With this version, I muted the background noise so it was easier to focus on the dance and the music and not be distracted by the chatter outside. I also edited the two clips together to create one fluid piece, but the angle I chose depended on the fluidity of the movement, and I wanted to pick out the better movements.

This is the video I intend on showing in the presentation.

Dance video – changes

Changes:

I decided to film my dance in the dance studio because of the open space of the room. I also decided to film in front of the mirrors because I wanted to reflect the movement of the dance so it was visible from different perspectives and there was a row of costumes and props on the back wall so I wanted to ensure they weren’t in shot.

I also decided against the original costuming idea because I felt like it didn’t really represent anything and I only had limited time in the performance area so I decided to prioritise the dance and the space as opposed to the space.

I also experimented with the angles of the camera, I kept to one side because if it was filmed on the other side, the backdrop would have been different. However, I mixed two clips together that were close up and then from further away.

‘Stream of consciousness’ – video 3

Third draft:

This is the video I intend on showing in the presentation. I filmed the same objects but with more of a theme. The visual effect is the same throughout, it’s called ‘Dreamy’ so it is appropriate for my overall theme of dreams and consciousness. I kept the silence because I feel like it creates an atmosphere of slight discomfort and confusion which is what I want.

Dance video – 2

First draft:

This is the first draft of the video I intend on showing. After posting this to YouTube, I realised that you could still here background noise, like people chatting and my feet on the floor, so I decided to mute the video to bring out the music more. I also didn’t experiment with angles here so it is just one continuous clip, which after experimenting with the clips all together, isn’t what I wanted. I also wasn’t keen on my dancing in parts of this, like at the end I bobbled on my turns, by incorporating different angles, I can use the parts from both clips that I like.

‘Stream of consciousness’ – brainstorm!

Post feedback

After feedback given in class last week and a lot of rearranging of ideas, I decided that I needed to look at my work in a different way. I thought I would have to start filming everything from scratch but I am trying to just find a different, more effective way of editing and filming some of my shots.

I intend to use the same objects and some of the same shots as my first draft, but change some of the editing and some of the ways I shoot the objects.

This is my new set of ideas:

  • Dog in a blanket – camera pans from left side of the screen, across to the right side of the screen (done)
  • Scarf – blowing in the wind, flies off from the left side of the screen, to the right side of the screen (done)
  • Boots – someone wearing them, jumping in from the left of the screen into the centre, then jumps off to the right of the screen (done)
  • ‘Kinky Boots’ poster – on a tree, blows off to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Makeup – panning shot from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Eye – panning shot from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Hand – hand pans camera from the right side of the screen, then pans it to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Handwriting – writes ‘Side to Side’ written from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (reverse the video) (done)
  • Book – flick the pages from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Tree – panning shot from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Leaves – leaves blow to the right side of the screen (done)
  • Flower – flowers blow to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Flower drawing – panning shot from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (pre)
  • Pencils – pencils pan from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (pre)
  • Highlighters – throw them from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (pre)
  • Torch – light gets panned from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen (done)
  • Phone – picks up phone from the right side of the screen and puts it down to the left side of the screen
  • Laptop – camera pans from the right side of the screen from the left side of the screen (done)
  • Camera – camera appears from the right side of the screen through the mirror (done)
  • Editing software – sliding the timeline bar to the left (done)
  • Bed – the cushions pan from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen

‘Stream of consciousness’ – more ideas

Sound:

I decided that maybe having my video in silence would be a good idea because it will be shown in the same room as my dance video which does have sound over it, so to stop the two sounds conflicting, I will have my ‘stream of consciousness’ video in silence.

Visuals:

I still like the idea of the clips being seemingly random but having an actual meaning behind it, however I think I need to think about presenting it and moulding it together in a different way. Some of the things I need to think about are:

  • Maybe not incorporating so many coloured effects
  • Different angles
  • Maybe even different objects being filmed

Presentation:

I really like the idea of the box so I am going to keep it as it was the first time I showed it.

Feedback from lesson – 27/04/18

After showing my stream of consciousness video in the class, I received some feedback that has helped me realise that I need to make some changes to my video.

Sound:

In terms of sound, I was just experimenting when I chose the sound I did, however it doesn’t fit with my theme very well and is rather annoying. I might try experimenting with what it sounds like with no sound at all, I’m not usually a fan of silence as I don’t want my viewers to be bored, but it might fit well with my video.

Visuals:

The purpose of the video is to have different objects that link on from one another, so at first they seem like random objects but hopefully, people will work out that every object links together so the whole video is connected. I think I will try and film some more things and see if I can make the video more critical as opposed to just a random montage, as I want people to understand my concept.

Presentation:

In this lesson, I experimented with a box and a black sheet to see if my idea would work being brought to life, and I think it did. Below is a photo of what it looked like:

IMG_3610

I think this worked because people seemed to understand that it’s representing looking into someone’s mind and seeing things from their perspective and I’d love to keep that idea going. To improve the idea, I think I’d paint the box black and attach the sheet on the back so people can still sit under the sheet so they can be fully submerged.

Progress:

To progress into the final week of production, I think that I need to focus on:

  • Decorating and designing the box
  • Filming new clips to fit with a more critical approach
  • Editing the final thing
  • Experiment without sound

In terms of my other video, I need to focus on:

  • Finishing the dance choreography
  • Sorting out my costume
  • Filming the video
  • Editing the video with the pre-recorded sound over the top
